As we launch into 2013, I want to thank all of you who have supported Stevinson Ranch these past 17 years. Can you believe that it has been 17 years since we opened back in 1995? Time flies when you are having fun!

I suppose that it's time for a blog from Kelley's Corner, since the last blog I wrote was this past summer and now it's officially winter. I apologize for not writing at all during the fall, however I'm not certain anyone reads this blog so there may not be any need for an apology.

Where has summer gone? Seems like yesterday that my son Griffin came home from the University of Colorado to join us working at Stevinson Ranch. It was great having him home with us, however after 3 months together I think both mom and dad and Griffin are OK with his being back in Boulder. It's funny when kids leave for college and experience independence for the first time and then return home to the old rules, both sides have a hard time adjusting.

How about Ernie and the Oakland A's? I love both of these underdogs! Everyone has basically written off both of these former champions.

OK, what happened the the famed "albatross" ball of Louis Oosthuizen that he tossed into the gallery surrounding the second hole at the Masters on Sunday? Well, as you have prbably seen or read, it was caught by Wayne Mitchell, 59, of New Tripoli, PA which is outside Allentown. Vice-President of Air Products, Mitchell and his wife were tournament guests of an executive of Dow Chemical in Midland, MI. Along the rope line, they had been seated at the par 5 second hole since 10:00 am, patiently waiting over four hours for the leaders to come through.

This is a wonderful time of year. The beginning of the baseball season....summer is just around the corner and golf starts kicking into high gear. The Masters Tournament never fails to disappoint. Bubba Watson, Augusta's latest honorary member. A classic good 'ol boy, however probably not quite as refined as the typical memba' of "The National". I heard him say in an after round interview, 'I was knewing that it was going to be a dog fight". KNEWIN'.......that's a classic.....ya' gotta love Bubba!! I heard his pals say that when he had to hit that 40 yard hook on the play off hole that he was going to be OK because Bubba likes to hit curves. He has trouble with the dreaded straight ball. Never had a lesson.....never seen his swing on video. Go Bubba Go.

Many of you don't know that Rick Neuheisel and I are good friends and that my daughter Casey works for Ucla football. This has been an emotional week for me as I know how much he cared about his team and how much he loved being the Ucla coach. He is a Ucla alum and the most valuable player in the 1984 Rose Bowl. After stints coaching at Colorado, Washington and with the Baltimore Ravens it was like coming home when he was selected the head coach in 2008. I really thought that he would be in that position forever, however there is enormous pressure to win at major Division I schools. Football is the primary revenue generator for athletics at most schools, so the expectation to fill seats with victories is overwhelming. Rick is a great guy. He has played Stevinson with me on numerous occasions as his wife, Susan's family is from Stockton. Now that he no longer has a job, there might be a sighting here at The Ranch.

We are off to a great start with the new Learning Academy here at The Ranch. Everyone who has had an opportunity to experience the amazing technology that enables you to see your swing from several different angles along with information like clubhead speed, ball speed, clubhead path, launch angle and smash effect is blown away. You don't have to be a touring pro to have access to the information that the best in the world have been using for some time in order to better understand their swings and get fitted with the proper equipment. While we are constantly amazed with advances in technology that exists all around us everyday, now it is available to help improve your golf game. If you are serious about improving you really need to check this out.

I am hearing rumors that things are a mess in the US with our inept Congress not being able to compromise on anything meaningful causing the stock market to spin into an abyss. I’m trying not to listen to the news because I am enjoying the trip of a lifetime with my family in Ireland. My son Griffin, who many of you got to know this summer at the golf course, and I are here to play in the World Father/Son Championship at Waterville next week. We are meeting up with our close friends Martin and Daniel Connolly and Steve and Kyle John. Martin is an Irish ex-pat who was born and raised in West Cork. He know lives in San Francisco and owns the best Irish pub in the City, Johnny Foley’s on O’Farrell Street.

Considering that my family is originally from Galway, Ireland I particularly loved Darren Clarke’s victory in the Open Championship. They must be doing something right on the Emerald Isle with four major championship winner’s in the last several years (Harrington, McDowell, McIlroy and Clarke).
